Communications Coordinator (6 months with possibility of renewal)

AfroResistance, a Black Immigrant Women led organization, seeks a detail-oriented Full Time Communications Coordinator. The Communications Coordinator will be responsible for developing and maintaining all aspects of AfroResistance communications.

The mission of AfroResistance is to educate and organize for human rights, racial justice and democracy throughout the Americas.

We center the lived experiences of subjugated knowledge of Black Women and Girls. We start from the position that Black Women and Girls have fundamental human rights and that all structures, institutions and practices that are in place to violate those rights must be targeted and dismantled through our own efforts in relationship and in solidarity with allied organizations and individuals.   


Duties & Responsibilities:

The communications coordinator will take the lead on branding, positioning, communications, and other marketing directions for the organization, and support the Communications and programmatic aspects of AfroResistance in the following tasks:


  • Website and Social Media Coordination (55%)

    • Develop, implement and manage social media strategies for multiple platforms, multiple programs and events and in multiple languages (English, Spanish and Portuguese) 

    • Create social media guides for each of AfroResistance’s events, campaigns and publications

    • Design visual concepts using graphic design tools 

    • Stay up to date with the latest social media best practices and technologies

    • Implement ongoing development and maintenance of AfroResistance website and other organizational online social media platforms like Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, Twitter, linkedin, etc;

    • Update all of AfroResistance social media on a regular basis with relevant material, highlighting key events and achievements, especially from the region;

    • Content development, preparation and production of communication materials, including newsletters,  case studies,  and publications – all to be uploaded on AfroResistance online platforms;

    • Strength a strong network of Black organizations in the region via social media (ie. whatsapp, facebook, etc.)

    • Understanding of SEO, analytics and web traffic metrics


  • General Communications Support (20%)

    • Provide support to Program Director and Executive Director in developing press and public statements capturing key messages of AfroResistance

    • Monitor reporters online and on social media for press opportunities

    • Develop and maintain a press list for journalists in the U.S. and in the region.

    • Call and collect AfroResistance contacts for stories and quotes

    • Contribute towards the development organizational programs through a communications lens

    • Organize fundraising campaigns or events 

    • Track media coverage of AfroResistance

    • General admin support as related to communications role


  • Publications (15%)

    • Coordination of AfroResistance Children’s Anthology, an annual publication.

    • Coordination of Black Women’s Journal, an annual publication


  • Events (10%)

    • Assist in executing AfroResistance events

      • Coordination of interpretation technology and providing support to speakers 

      • Technical support via web conference platforms (Zoom, Streamyard, GiveButter, etc.)


Qualifications and Experience

  • Have at least 3 to 5 years of work experience in the field of media and social and racial justice, immigration and/or gender and advocacy within community based spaces such as a non profit organization

  • Commitment to liberation and previous participation in a social justice setting.

  • Excellent command of written and spoken English is mandatory;

  • Excellent command of written and spoken of either Spanish and/or Portuguese

  • Strong expertise in Information Technology (IT) with a focus on content management systems digital tools and social media platforms;

  • Strong graphic design skills and knowledge of  design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite and/or Canva.

  • Proficiency and familiarity in GSuite applications including Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Calendar. 

  • Strong communication skills;

  • Ability to write clearly and concisely;
